The National Electoral Commission (NEC) has Embarked on five days meeting with stakeholders on New Boundaries

The National Electoral Commission (NEC) is visiting the districts for five days to discuss the new boundaries created by the Province Act Cap 60 of 2017, that was passed into law on the 13 March 2017.
The Director of External Relations and Media, Albert Massaquoi, said this is the second round of district stakeholders engagements on the Constituency and Ward boundary delimitation. “It is called second round because, earlier in July -August of last year, a validation of the Constituency and Wards was also done”.
This engagement was done based on the existing 14 electoral districts and four regions that have changed. “We are now talking about 16 electoral districts including Falaba and Karina districts and five regions including the North West and the other chiefdoms which are now added to the 149 chiefdoms”.
Massaquoi said, “The addition of these two districts means an addition of councillors, MPs, District Council Chairs and Mayors, so we are going to have Districts Council chairs for Falaba and Karene districts and Mayor for Port Loko.”
Stakeholders included: Paramount Chiefs, CSOs, Political Parties, women and youth groups and the media. The NEC Director of External Relations, said, “So far, there is mixed reactions, especially when NEC has done earlier engagements on the previous constituencies and ward boundary delimitation”.
There is mixed feelings since it has to do with new boundaries. “We still maintain the record of 132 seats but because of the rearrangement of some of the chiefdoms, Constituencies and Wards there is a concern. Some think it favours some while some think it does not favour them as they believed that it is against the wish they had earlier hoped for”.
Elections will be held nine months from now, in March 2018. Massaquoi said they will be ready.
Since the Instrument of Constituency and Boundary Limitation was kicked out of Parliament, Albert Massaquoi, said “We have met with the office of the Attorney General and a sub-committee was set up. We want to ensure that by the 7th of September, that is exactly six months to elections, we would have completed all work relating to elections”.
“By the end of June, we should have completed this engagement so by the 30th we would have completed the report and present it to the AG who will then table it in Parliament before their recess on the 13th July, so when it is approved it becomes a legal documents”.

President Koroma’s New Year’s message to the people of Sierra Leone

“The New Year is a moment for moving forward with hope, faith and fortitude. But even as we move forward, we must not forget that our nation was severely tested in the past 18 months by a vicious enemy. The test brought about great tragedy in our nation, but it also showed the best in many Sierra Leoneans.

“It showed the best in many of our doctors, nurses and other workers, it showed the best in many of our security agencies, and it showed the best amongst many chiefs and thousands of youths, market women, musicians and ordinary citizens in every district and region of our beloved country.

“Let our New Year resolution be to move on with the best in us, let us carry on with the better actions that allowed our country to defeat an Ebola virus which ferocity was unlike any the world had seen before.

“The better actions are the new habits of hygiene and sanitation we inculcated, the new attention to details that we ensured in our labs and treatment centers, and the newer commitments to Sierra Leoneans leading the way and comprising over 90% of the people at the frontlines and command centers of the fight against Ebola.

“We must build upon this greater confidence in ourselves, we must face the future with belief that we can overcome our limitations and build a future that entrenches our best values and actions.

“My Government’s Post Ebola Recovery Plan draws from this belief that we are capable of achieving the goals we have set forth for ourselves.

“My New Year resolution is to continue to work tirelessly to achieve these goals, to ensure the implementation of our plans we have designed for the priority sectors of health, education, social protection, including Ebola survivors, the private sector, energy and water.

“We salute our international partners for their continued support to our country, but it belongs to us to utilize that support to build a more resilient society.

“That is why all of us must make resolutions that should bring out the good in us for our country, our community and our families. The threats of future outbreak is still with us, but if we resolve to continue to bring out the best in us, we can stop any future outbreak in its tracks.

“The globalized world has great threats, from extreme weather events to terrorism and diseases that are no respecters of boundaries.

“But we can prevent the threats from overwhelming us by utilizing our better actions to grab the great opportunities that beckon to all of us.

“The good in us is greater than some of the ugly events that we face. Let us utilize the good in us to build a better country.

“Happy New Year and God Bless Sierra Leone.”

UN mission in Liberia looking in to alleged miss conduct by peacekeepers.

The United Nations Mission in Liberia (UNMIL) has dispatched a preliminary fact-finding team to look into an allegation that two members of its military personnel were involved in a possible case of serious misconduct involving the beating of a teenage boy.

The incident is alleged to have occurred on 4 December in Bong County, according to a statement issued today by the Mission, which added that it first learned of the allegation on 29 December.

"The Mission takes such allegations extremely seriously and dispatched yesterday a preliminary fact-finding team," UNMIL Officer-in-Charge Waldemar Vrey said in the statement.

"While the facts in this case are being established, our thoughts are with the boy, whose condition remains moderately serious, and his family," he added.

The Mission has agreed to facilitate the transfer of the patient on humanitarian grounds from Phebe Hospital to JFK Hospital in Monrovia, Liberia"s capital.

"All necessary steps will be taken to establish the facts in this case," Mr. Vrey stated, while calling for all parties to remain calm and cooperate with those establishing the facts.

Among the tasks mandated to UNMIL by the Security Council is to continue to support the Government of Liberia to consolidate peace and stability in the country and protect civilians.

The National Power Authority (NPA) head office freetown caught fire today.

The fifth floor of the office of the electricity supply and billing company in Freetown is still smouldering this evening, after fire broke out in the building early this morning.

It is not clear what started the fire, but suspicions are rife. Neither is it the first time Electricity House has gone ablaze.

Poorly equipped firemen battled all day long to bring the fire under control. Luckily there was no one in the building when the fire started.

It is suspected that criminal syndicates working for individuals that are interested in destroying the records of the company may have set the office alight.

As the police begin to conduct their investigations they will be looking at the possibility of arson, given the thousands of electricity utility bill defaulters in the city, who would be interested in starting the New Year with a ‘clean electricity bill’ by destroying the records.

In the last five years of the life of the ruling APC government there have been several auspicious fires at prominent government offices.
