Ministry Of Social Welfare Gives Supports to Ebola Widows and Orphans in Bombali District

Ministry of Social Welfare, Gender and Children’s Affairs through a decentralised process has continued its ongoing post-Ebola livelihood support with cash grants to thirty (30) widows who lost their husbands to Ebola Virus Disease (EVD). Each widow got with One Million Leones (Le1,000,000) cheque each as a Small Scale Business startup. At the same event yesterday, school materials and food items for fifty (50) EVD orphans from across Bombali District, were also handed out. 




 Mr. Yayah Kargbo, Social Service Officer at the ministry’s Bombali office, confirmed that a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) was signed by each beneficiary (widow) to ensure that they use the money for the intended purpose. Also, he confirmed that they will follow the process until the funds and items are utilised accordingly. He also said that caregivers of EVD orphans were also advised to make good use of the items given to the orphans.


The chiefdoms in Bombali District that were targeted were Bombali Shebora, Makari Gbanti and Gbaki Mateboi for EVD orphans. Similarly, Bombali Shebora, Makari Gbanti, Gbaki Mateboi, Sanda Loko and Safroko Limba were targeted for EVD widows.

It is worth noting that the livelihood support exercise is one of similar exercises under the purview of Social Welfare ministry which are ongoing in several other districts all over the country including seriously affected districts like Kenema, Kailahun, Tonkolili and Port Loko.
