President Koroma Urges Speedy Implementation of FBC Rehabilitation Project



President Dr Ernest Bai Koroma on Tuesday July 19, 2016 called for speedy implementation of the rehabilitation of Fourah Bay College under the Arab Bank for Economic Development in Africa (BADEA) project.
During the signing ceremony of the civil works contract for the commencement of the project, the president described the occasion as very important to him and his government because it is a continuation of government's ongoing infrastructural development in the country. "This project is key to my administration" he said, urging the relevant authorities to be fully committed to its implementation.
Regarding timely commencement and completion of the BADEA project, President Koroma urged the contractors to adhere to their promises regarding deadline, and expressed firm hope that the project will commence immediately after the signing. "I hope that from this table we will go into the implementation of the project," he reiterated, and warned against delay of the project. "The Njala project was delayed and I do not want a repeat of that," he warned, adding that "if we run through this project on time, it will transform the university."




Giving an overview of the project, the civil engineer, Mr Barrie intimated that the FBC rehabilitation project was incepted in 2013 and was funded by three donors with an estimated cost of US$36,650,000 with Sierra Leone Government responsible for 10%. Being the largest university project in the history of Sierra Leone, Engineer Barrie said the project will involve the construction of school of architecture, water supply system and rehabilitation of roads on FBC campus.
The Minister of Finance and Economic Development, Mr Momodu Kargbo, admonished the administration of FBC, staff and contractors for the work to be completed on time and assured effective monitoring of the project.

Engineering, FBC, expressed profound thanks and appreciation to President Koroma and government for heeding to the cry of students and for bringing back the glory of FBC. He referred to the project as unique and should therefore be treated seriously.

The project contractor, Sogefel Sarl of Guinea expressed appreciation for being awarded the contract and assured completion of work within the time frame and with high quality. He expressed admiration over what he referred to as huge infrastructural building he witnessed on the road from Guinea to Sierra Leone and therefore thanked President Koroma and his government for such a big achievement.
The Secretary General of the Mano River Union (MRU) Dr Saran Daraba Kaba, who witnessed the signing ceremony commended President Koroma and his government for the rehabilitation of FBC. She referred to the project as great venture especially for the future of this country. Education, she emphasized, is the key to the development of any nation.
In his update, the Deputy Chairman of Court and Member of the Oversight Committee of the project, Hon. P.C. Bai Kurr Kanagbarosanka III informed that nineteen (19) people bought the bid document but only eleven (11) of them submitted theirs. He further informed that the bid document was of international standard and an engineering firm in neighbouring Guinea won the contract.
