A US-based Sierra Leonean lawyer detained for contempt of court has criticised the country’s court system as “rotten”.Allieu Iscandri was angered by his brief detention on Tuesday for allegedly commenting on the ongoing trial involving an opposition politician accused of bigamy.
The magistrate hearing the case ordered the detention of the lawyer after he posted on social media about the proceedings. He was then released after apologizing to the magistrate in public.
“I apologized to the court because my freedom was at stake,” he said Wednesday in a radio interview.
Iscandri is an arch critic of the All People Congress (APC) government, of which party he is a registered member.
He said he had hoped the party would live up to its expectation by serving the interest of the poor but instead it has resorted to stifling liberties.
“The system is rotten,” he said
