Allie Kabba finally gets bail

The opposition politician facing bigamy charges in Sierra Leone was finally granted bail on Tuesday after nearly a week in jail.
The politician, Allie Kabba, faces two count charges for allegedly lying under oath when he tied the knot with the Minister of Local Government Diana Konomanyi while he is already said to be married to another woman in the United States.

His bail application was rejected twice previously, first on Thursday December 31 when he first appeared in court. Bail application was again rejected on Monday.

The Freetown magistrate’s court, presided over by Seray Wurry, released the accused on his third appearance on Tuesday on a Le50 million (US$10, 000) bail with two sureties.

Kabba is one of 12 people running for the ticket of the opposition Sierra Leone Peoples Party (SLPP), which has since criticized his prosecution as politically motivated.

There was drama in the court when a senior US-based Sierra Leonean lawyer critical of the country`s justice system was detained for commenting on the matter. But Lawyer Allieu Iscandiri was later released after apologizing to the magistrate.

Kabba’s case comes back at the court on January 7
