and players in Sierra Leone are turning to non-league community football rather than domestic competitions organised by the country's football association.

The Sierra Leone Football Association (SLFA) is not currently organising a domestic league however it is running an FA Cup that only a handful fans watched over the weekend, despite entry being free.
Just a week earlier the biggest crowd for a domestic in more than 20 years saw Mountain City beat Fullah Town 1-0 in the non-league final at the Siaka Stevens stadium in Freetown.
Indeed the match attracted more fans than some of Sierra Leone's recent international matches in Freetown.

Even a breakaway league organised by 11 out of 14 premier league clubs that ended a few months ago failed to attract large crowds in Freetown.
The community tournament was organised by Freetown-based Central One Football Association (Cofa), an affiliate body to West Area Football Association (Wafa) which is a member of the SLFA.
The majority of players from Freetown's 11 top-flight clubs played in the community league including several internationals among them goalkeeper Unisa Koroma for Mountain City.
The match also boasted big-names coaches with Charlie Wright leading Mountain City and Amidu Karim in charge of Fullah Town.
The duo are usually assistant coach and head coach respectively at Kallon FC.
Replica shirts of the two finalists were sold out and the SLFA provided Fifa-standard referees for the final to show their support for the competition.
Blamoh Robert, the secretary general of premier league club Kallon FC (owned by former Leone Star Mohamed Kallon), says the SLFA should take note.
"This is a big slap in the face to the SLFA and its members in Freetown as Cofa has succeeded where we have failed," Roberts told BBC Sport.
"The SLFA and Wafa has brought football to standstill in the western area because of pride and ego.
"This is as a result of the impasse within the SLFA. This should teach us that we must play football no matter the situation.
"The SLFA should not be learning from Cofa, it should be the other way round."
The head of competitions of the SLFA Sorie Ibrahim Sesay disagrees that it reflects badly on them but admits that their FA Cup is struggling to attract crowds in Freetown.
"It's a fact the Cofa final attracted a big crowd but it's not a slap against us because we're organising the FA Cup despite the challenges we are facing," Sesay told BBC Sport.
"One of the challenges is that the ongoing national FA Cup is struggling to draw crowds in Freetown and it's because of infighting within the football family.
"Sierra Leoneans like football and I believe if we stop fighting and unite as a family we'll organise better domestic competitions and crowds will return to watch our matches."
The problems within Sierra Leone football and the recent Ebola outbreak means that there has been just one league season and two FA Cups since 2013.
The ongoing FA Cup has reached the last 32 but is being played without six premier league clubs.
The missing teams were also part of the 11 sides that took part in a breakaway league earlier this year and had vowed not to play in any competition organised by the current SLFA administration.
It is still not clear whether two other premier clubs, Freetown City FC and Mighty Blackpool, will take part in the current FA Cup.

Men can cheat because we bought the wedding ring & we own you' Ghanaian comedian Derrick K. Bonney (DKB)

In an interview with lifestyle and entertainment programme - Rhythm A to Z of Ghanaian radio station, Joy FM 99.7, Derrick Kobina Bonney, referred to as the 'King of Ghanaian comedy', said men can cheat on their wives since they bought the wedding ring.
"I keep telling the young girls, when your man cheats, you leave him to God. That was what our mothers and grandmothers did. He will later humble himself before the Lord. You don't payback. Men can cheat because we bought the wedding ring and we organised the wedding and you bear our surname. Even the word bride means a cook.
The man does not bear the woman surname so we own you. We take charge of you that's why you bear our surname. It's a honest fact. If you think otherwise, go and marry a woman” He said.

Kao Denero apologizes to all Sierra Leoneans for activities during his rally

“…I want the way forward for a new direction”

By Ishmael Kindama Dumbuya
Popular musical icon   in the music industry in Sierra Leone has apologized to all Sierra Leoneans for the ugly incident that took place on 5th April 2013. He also took the opportunity to call on the Authority in Sierra Leone especially the Sierra Leone Police to come into compromise and schedule another date for the launching of his album titled “Back To My Root”.

It could be recalled that Amara Denis Turay (aka) Kao Denero of the Black Leo Family was about to launch his back to my root album at the National Stadium on 6th April 2013 when it was cancelled by the Sierra Leone Police  as a result of violence  allegedly perpetuated by fans of Kao Denero. The rally was done on the eve of the show, which provided the opportunity for day-light-thieves to have carted away properties of petty traders, shops burgled and some innocent Sierra Leoneans beaten on the streets.
Kao Denero has accepted blame and takes responsibility of all that happened. At a Press Conference held last Friday 12th April 2013, victims of the rally gave testimonies of how they brutalized and made known their minds on what they experienced and seen on that fateful day.
Excerpt of Kao’s statement and apology
“Foremost, let me register my sincere apology to the people of Sierra Leone and to all those who were affected during the musical rally. I want to sincerely register my deepest regret and apologies to both the Government and people of Sierra Leone who may have been affected by this incident or otherwise who may have been offended by statements or comments made following the incident.
I would like to inform and make it known that in no uncertain terms-that I can’t, condon violence or thuggery. It is most regrettable that this has happened   and innocent people have suffered. I acknowledge and apologize for the distress caused by this incident.
Let me state that our music rally on Friday, 5thApril 2013 was approved and spearheaded by the Sierra Leone Police. We received a permit and told the routes that we should rally on and the convoy was led by the Police. The police recommended 150 officers to man the convoy to which we accepted and paid the complete amount.
I come from a very humble background, my father was an Airport staff and mother a local clerk. The war took a lot from us and made some of us a refugee in neighboring Guinea for several years. I know how difficult life can be for people who are struggling and working hard to meet their basic needs. I will not be a party to any group or activity that will negatively affect the lives of innocent citizens. This ugly situation was caused by a small misguided and foolish group of youths that infiltrated and hijacked the purpose of our peaceful event with the objective of messing up my programme
Individual act of looting and robbery, resistance to authority and violence against persons, disregard for lives and properties are not the focus and determination of Black Leo, nor was it the purpose of organizing the rally. It is important that we attune our consciences to ‘law and order’. ‘If we propagate a system of disregard we are acting outside the boundaries of law and order.

Despite all the pains that innocent victims have suffered and endured, notwithstanding, we have to believe and work out ways of accepting each other and acknowledge our wrong-doing and put the common good above personal interest.
To the affected victims, I vow to fight for their rights and I will work with them to chase the gangs and bring them to justice. I have declared an all-out war on gangs and gang culture.
It’s my goal to pursue these gangs- bring them to justice, in order to prevent a recurrence of similar conflict. I will also work to transform the mindset of those young people and the unemployed who are engaged in criminal activities.
The surest way of eliminating gangs is to ensure that children and young people never want or feel the need to join them. To this end we need to tackle issues in our society and seek to nurture and support strong families and stronger communities.
I have already established a Foundation called “Mama Nor Dae Na Hose Pikin” to address the plight of young people   and provide educational support to children.
Furthermore, I will set up a project in an effort to raise public awareness to help prevent conflict and end the gang culture. I will use my talents and the arts towards community cohesion, justice and protection of vulnerable people in Sierra Leone, in my capacity as a peace ambassador working alongside the United Sierra Leone Initiative.
Differences can bring conflict, confusion, and uncertainty, which can make us feel left out in society, create and lead to an uncontrollable situation. One way of embracing these differences is through conversation and   positive actions, through connecting with each other, through understanding where the other is coming from, stepping into their shoes, and assuming that each person has something to offer. This will form the basis of my new leadership approach, which will make use of facilitation, collaboration and participation.
History shows that mountains can be moved when small groups of people     mobilize, work together and take positive action. We need a change in attitude to enable us move beyond politics, race, class and creed. We have many Sierra Leoneans who are making a difference, both in the Sierra Leone and abroad. Each of us can make a difference. Individuals can initiate projects with their colleagues to achieve a common goal and help build a better Sierra Leone.
  1. I will work with the Police to maintain law and order. I will continue to preach the gospel of peace and non-violence.
  2. I will work with all everyone who may have been affected and ensure that they secure justice.
  3.  I will employ an independent security firm and work closely with the police and other security agencies to ensure that future event is violence free.
  4. I will not allow any gang   member to be admitted into the event and reckless dressing or behavior will not be allowed.
  5. I will work for peace and a United Sierra Leone and build bridges with all people including my brothers and sisters in the music Industry.
I do hope we can put this most regrettable incident behind us and move forward as allies and partners.Let me thank the United Sierra Leone Initiative for the opportunity offered to me to engage some of the victims that are directly affected and to work together for justice, security and peace for all.

Sierra Leone News: With new $138 million energy project, World Bank breaks record in supporting Salone

Parminder Brar, World Bank Country Manager

Parminder Brar, World Bank Country ManagerThe World Bank approved on Thursday, July 14 a project to build a new power plant for Sierra Leone. The project comes at a cost of $138 million US dollars.
Parminder Brar, World Bank Country Manager for Sierra Leone, said the power plant project is a milestone for progress in solving Sierra Leone’s energy problems.
“For those of us that live in Freetown, all of us who live around the country, I think electricity is probably one of the biggest constraints facing Sierra Leone,” Brar said at a press conference at the World Bank headquarters in downtown Freetown. “Eighty five percent of the population of Sierra Leone does not have access to electricity. That is a major problem we have to live with, and this new electricity project is going to almost double the availability of electricity.”
Sierra Leone’s most important power plant, the 50 megawatt Bumbuna Hydroelectric Power Station located in the Seli River 200 km northeast of Freetown, is inconsistent, Brar said.
“It can produce in the rainy season, but in the dry season it goes down to zero. And we know this for a fact  what happened this year when the water level reaches 210 feet, the power station is switched off.”
In addition, Brar said it’s a problem for a nation to depend on a river for its supply of power. Sierra Leone needs a base load power supply, which the new power station, with a capacity of 57 megawatts, will provide.
The project, to be located in Kissy, is expected to be operational in June or July 2018.  Final financial clearance on the project is slated for September or October 2016, after which time the 18 month construction process can begin.
The World Bank has a policy letter from the government that, among other measures, commits to covering any shortfall in funding for the project if it occurs.
The World Bank looked at a number of options for expanding energy production in Sierra Leone, Brar said, and the current project would be cheaper than many alternatives.
The project’s focus is on Freetown and the surrounding area. This is partly because Sierra Leone as a whole has a lack of infrastructure to transmit electricity effectively, Brar said. “Even if we wanted to send electricity around the country, the network doesn’t exist,” he said.
There is a planned electricity line between Sierra Leone and Liberia, to be operational in 2019, but until then, the provinces should continue to develop off-grid solutions like solar power for their energy needs, Brar said. Renewables like hydro and solar power are the World Bank’s priority for energy in Sierra Leone.
To fund the project, the World Bank is providing a credit guarantee of $40 million US dollars, the IFC is providing a loan of $30 million dollars, and has also organized another $73.5 million loan from the FMO, EAIF, CDC and AfDB. MIGA is providing a guarantee of $60 million.
These loans are expected to be paid back within a 15 year time frame.
“What the board was extremely happy about that in a fragile country like Sierra Leone, all three arms of the World Bank have collaborated on a much needed energy project,” Brar said.
